Away from Substack, toward something new

When Substack added notes (like on Twitter/X) and video content, it stopped being Substack, and became just another social media platform. Social media is good for a few things, like testing the boundaries of friendship by sharing crazy reels. But mostly, social media is a pit. It's a source of yearning for things we don’t (and sometimes can't) have.

Social media encourages negative social comparison. To give it some credit, social media also encourages striving to be better. Striving is good. But usually, social media cranks up that desire to a harmful level.

I don't want my writing to quietly encourage negative social comparison or endless scrolling.

Instead I write for me, to clarify my thoughts on topics that matter to me, and for a handful of friends and family who read my posts. No like button, no share button. If you like what I write, you can let me know directly (which, coincidentally, is the way most communication happened throughout our history as a species). If you think what I write is worth sharing, the link is in the address bar.

It's a breath of fresh air.
